Valiants manager Martin Foyle
Port Vale boss Martin Foyle was playing the last time the Valiants turned up at Brunton Park, in September 1996, when a 2-2 draw was enough to take them into the third round of the League Cup following a 1-0 victory over United in the first leg at Vale Park. Foyle speaking to The Staffordshire Sentinel about his red card in that match after
picking up his second booking a minute from time :

"That lovely rule had just come out about kicking the ball away. We were drawing 2-2 and I went round the goalkeeper. The referee sent me off because I had carried on with play, but I didn't hear the whistle.

"I can't remember a lot about the game - other than the fact we went through. But I do remember getting poleaxed by Stephane Pounewatchy, who elbowed me off the ball. Not the best of memories then, but we didn't lose so that was the good thing."

On the prospect of facing United these days Foyle commented :

"They (Carlisle) are a very good home side. Very bright and fast, so we have a very hard game. They are a good attacking force. We have to be defensively strong if we are to win something."

Out of the reckoning for the Valiants tomorrow will be midfielder Danny Sonner who is serving a one-match ban for picking five up bookings, and Jason Talbot with a broken rib. George Pilkington missed training this week through illness and it will be a decision on the day to see if he features. Colin Miles limped off in Vale's last game, a 2-0 defeat at home to Swansea, but he has now returned to full fitness and is expected to take his place in the Valiants starting line-up.

In transfer news at Vale Park this week the visitors signed lanky Leyton Orient centre-half Clayton Fortune on loan until the 1st of January. Fortune, who featured for the O's in their 3-1 defeat at Brunton Park in mid-August, spent seven months on loan with the Valiants last season from his then parent-club Bristol City. He may have to settle for a place on the bench, but on-loan Nottingham Forest midfielder Ross Gardner is in line to replace the suspended Sonner in the starting line-up.

The local paper is also stating that Vale have re-signed on loan, for a second time, striker Stefan Moore from QPR for a month, although neither club website is reporting the move. Boss Martin Foyle apparently missed out on three transfer targets on Thursday, two of those, along with Simon Gillett, being free agent Danny Cadamarteri who turned down the move to Staffordshire, while Swansea forward Leon Knight joined Barnsley on loan.

Vale are now considering a January transfer window move for Southampton midfielder Gillett after failing in their bid to sign him on loan this week. Vale were keen to bring in the 21-year-old before yesterday's deadline for loan deals, but they lost out to League One rivals Bournemouth. Foyle being a keen admirer of the player who has just completed a three-month loan spell with Blackpool.

The referee for tomorrow's match is Lee Mason from Bolton, and he will be assisted down the lines by Andrew Butler from Lancashire and Bob Pollock from Merseyside, meanwhile the fourth official will be Brian Tattan, also from Merseyside.
