Seagulls boss Gus Poyet
Brighton manager Gus Poyet spoke to BBC Sussex, The Argus and his club's official website ahead of his side's game against Carlisle at Brunton Park tomorrow, Poyet first talking about Greg's Abbott's response to his comments regarding the Johnstone's Paint Trophy last week :

" To be honest I was surprised with Greg Abbott's comments and I didn't make any comment because I didn't know where he was coming from. He gave me a call and explained that he only made an opinion on my opinion and that is fair enough, so it has all settled down.

" He didn't given an opinion on what I should or should not say and said it was taken out of context. It is over for me and I am looking forward to seeing him tomorrow, and nothing will happen. There is no problem at all between us. I said to him it is good enough for me that you have called me.

" I think the test for us right now is to see if we are consistent enough. To be at the top in this division you need to be a very consistent team. Everybody knows that we can play well, everybody knows that we are a difficult team to play against because we are different. We need to make sure that we keep that consistency everywhere we go in.

" It doesn't matter who it is against, if it is at home or away or against a top team or a team in the bottom four. So, that is the main thing right now, to see how we can keep that consistency, and this is definitely a test to see where this squad is at, playing two tough games in such a short period. But, we trained well this week, and everything looks good. "

" It's becoming more difficult for the players, not only to start, but even to make the squad. That is something that we have seen this week in training, and competition for places will certainly help the team. The players have got to be showing the manager every day that they want to make the first team, and then be one of the subs after that.

" I like that, because I like competition for places within my squad. That gives me the option to change things around if it's not going right for the team. We had a great reaction from Agustin Battipiedi, who was not in the squad last Saturday. He trained fantastically well, so it will be difficult for me to leave him out again. Maybe someone who didn't perform as well in the week will be out of the team.

" Gordon (Greer) and Fran (Sandaza) will both be available to me and Peter (Brezovan) is fit. We need to make sure we pick the right team to win at Carlisle without thinking about what we will do at Plymouth on Tuesday. Carlisle have been doing great, they are a difficult team to play against, they know the way they play and how they try to stop the opposition. But, we think that we know everything about them so we are ready. "

" We knew in the first few away games we had sides that might be up there. That includes Swindon, Sheffield Wednesday, Southampton, Peterborough and now Carlisle and Plymouth. We are going to try to use the players in the best possible way. We have two long trips in three days and we need to make sure we make good decisions.

" The players need to be on their toes, to understand why somebody is going to play in which games and try to get on with their jobs. They know that in normal circumstances, if we are in a winning run and there are no long trips, they are going to be playing week in, week out.

" But when we play so many games, starting with Carlisle and Plymouth, we need to use the squad. It won't be squad rotation, not crazy with five in and five out, but using special players in special places to go and win the game. "
