Reserves League Round-Up This Week

The Citizens now three points behind the Clarets while having played a fixture more after losing their third match on the trot on Monday afternoon, that being a 1-0 defeat away to Accrington. Sean McConville the man scoring the only goal of the game for Stanley at the Fraser Eagle Stadium.

Carlisle's season ended with a bumper 6-0 victory at Brunton Park on Monday against a young Bury side. Fresh from respective loan spells at Rochdale and Workington respectively Gary Madine and Andy Cook bagged a brace apiece, while Jonny Blake and Gavin Rothery also scored a goal each. United currently second in the table but results in the final six matches of the campaign could see them end up as low down as fifth come close of play.

One of the sides that could catch the Blues is a resurgent Morecambe outfit who started this season badly after winning the title last year. The Shrimps this week hammering Rochdale 5-0 at home, 18-year old Blackburn trialist Jack Brierley certainly enjoying his outing at Christie Park as he netted four times, youngster Ricky Ball the other Morecambe goalscorer.

Finally in the division this week Blackpool drew 2-2 at home to Tranmere on Wednesday night. Luke Denson giving Rovers the lead before Stuart Green equalised for the Seasiders from the penalty spot, the Bloomfield Road outfit then going 2-1 up thanks to Louis Almond, Josh Macauley though ensuring that honours finished even when he fired home for the visitors with 15 minutes to go.

Outside of the north-west it was the League Cup final this week and Sunderland left Derby's Pride Park with the trophy on Tuesday night. Jordan Cook putting the Black Cats 2-0 up with goals in the opening minute and then just before the hour-mark. Arsenal-loanee Nacer Barazite pulled a goal back for the Rams shortly afterwards but a Jack Colback 84th minute penalty ensured that Sunderland completed a league and cup double this season.
