Blues manager Neil McDonald
United boss Neil McDonald spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's Derek Lacey on Tuesday afternoon as he talked about the 1-1 draw at home to Huddersfield Town last Saturday and what he thought Carlisle needed to do in the last eight games of the season in their quest for a play-off place :

" Every point is a good point, we still have to win our home games but that it is the most disappointing thing - we didn't win the game. We've tried to make sure that if we don't win we don't lose over the last ten games or so, that's got us points to be close to the play-offs. We have to make sure that we can try to win a home game though, which we haven't done for a couple of games now.

" I think we played a lot better in the second half than we did in the first half - so that is encouraging. We made a few chances and probably had the best chance to win the game with Joe (Garner) in the end. With not knowing the rules because it hasn't happened before I'm not so sure you can try and change the verdict - two yellow cards you can't appeal against it. So, we just have to take it on the chin and Joe just has to learn from that. He's only going to miss one game, which is still disappointing that he has to miss one game, but it gives somebody else a chance.

" The transfer window, as it is, is crazy but we know the rules and we have to abide by the rules. Thursday is the last day and what you have got after Thursday is what you have got for the rest of the season. We're having a look around, everybody is trying to have a last little piece of the jigsaw I suppose. If they are struggling against relegation they are trying to get someone to help them out of that and teams are trying to sign for that last little bit of a push towards promotion. We're looking, if we can find the right person to come in, and we're lucky enough to get him, then that would be fantastic, we've had no approaches ourselves yet.

" We have to hold on to the fact that we are still very, very close to the play-offs. If we can win on Saturday then that will put us a little bit closer hopefully, the more games we try and win the closer we'll get. We still have to make sure that we're not gung ho though at the moment and get caught on the counter-attack and lose six, seven or eight games by going for it. We still have to be careful, we still have to have a gameplan, and we need to try to implement that to try to get as many points as we possibly can to try to get close to the play-offs. "

" Three points on Saturday would put us back in the mix, but we certainly haven't gone into games trying to draw or to get beat, we've tried to work hard on how to win a game. There are certain times you play 4-3-3 and people think that it's negative, but it's not, it's three forwards. There are times when we have gone 4-4-2 and we have had four centre-forwards, two wide and two upfront, so we have been adventurous. Their (Gillingham's) manager thinks he needs two more victories, and he says that the quicker those two victories come the better, hopefully he doesn't get one on Saturday. "

" Overall I think it has been a magnificent achievement by the players to be in this situation where they are closer to the play-offs than they are to relegation. We look back and we've probably dropped a couple of points where we maybe could have got a few more and that is frustrating in that we possibly could have been that little bit higher. I suppose every team could say that but we're happy with the position we are in at the moment - we've still got eight games to go and we've set the target for as many points as we possibly can, and where that takes us we'll wait and see.

" There is only Danny Graham of the loanees to think about, we've been in touch with Middlesbrough this week to see whether or not we can extend his loan. We can only extend it for another month so Danny unfortunately will probably miss the last two games of the season but everybody else is here until the end of the season.

" I think the transfer market should be an open market, it's concentrated I suppose where you've got all of January and then just before August, and then you've another one towards the end of March. You've got plenty of time to pick and choose but it's not always easy to pick and choose in that window. If it was open all the way through then it gives you a better chance to see the players, and it's not rushed or a guessing game. It's more calculated if there is more time to do the deal. "
