Blues manager Neil McDonald
United boss Neil McDonald spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's Derek Lacey on Saturday evening as he gave his opinion on the excellent 5-0 win at home to Gillingham yesterday afternoon. McDonald talking about trying to finish as high up as the League One table as possible :

" We're certainly not letting the season peter out, we're six points away from it, hopefully those three points have kept us up now so we can relax a little bit more like we did in the second half. I thought we dominated the first half altogether, we started off really, really brightly and got the goal and then we were just waiting for the second goal to come. I was a little bit nervous in the second half for ten or fifteen minutes but once we got the second goal I think that totally changed the game altogether.

" It was a fantastic result because it's got us three points, we've scored a few goals at home, which we've been struggling to do, and it's got us back on track at home. It was very important, people kept on asking me if it was a must win game, I think every game is a must win game now. That's not to try to put too much pressure on the players though because we're still in a fantastic position, newly promoted and in the top nine - it's fantastic.

"I think everybody played their part today, I thought it was a good team performance, a good solid team performance, and the individuals always shine through which is excellent. I think Kevin Gall got done for a foot-up so the next person to do that, and he (Mark Bentley) has had a yellow card before that. It might be a bit harsh in a way but I don't think it changed the game to a certain extent.

" We said that if we played high tempo for the first 20 minutes that we might just kill the game off. We've got the second goal and we've had a man sent off for them so that gives us a little bit more space, and I think we exploited that space very, very well. It's nice to see the end product, a ball into the box for somebody to finish, which is what we've been working on all season but never really quite got there, either in the finish or on the cross. To score five goals though is something to be proud of really.

" I keep on saying that it's all about preparation, we've had a really good week this week, the lads have been well switched on. Even the reserves who played against Accrington the other day, I enjoyed going down to that game and watching it and everyone was right at it. This week has just been finished off fantastically well with a 5-0 victory.

" Everyone has got something to play for haven't they, of course they have, we've given ourselves a chance to be close. If we can just keep on picking up points, more wins than draws and losses then it slightly puts the pressure on other people because we're not expected to be there in truth. It's fantastic that we are and it's great that we have been in the top half of the table all season. We want to make sure that we finish in the top half and if we can get further up by putting on pressure by winning games, and winning games handsomely like we did today, who knows what might happen.

" It strengthens your hand the higher you finish up. I've spoken to about eight, nine or ten managers over the last couple of days and they are reluctant to let anybody out. It's been very encouraging that they have said to come back at the end of the season though, so we've sown the seeds and that gives us a chance to strengthen the team at the end of the year. We've got what we've got now, and it's good to start that run with the squad that we have with a 5-0 victory, which finished off a fantastic week's work. "
