Blues boss Greg Abbott
United caretaker manager Greg Abbott spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria's Derek Lacey on Saturday evening as he gave his opinion on the Cumbrians opening their 2007-08 home campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Oldham :

" It's not easy but it's two games done and two games won and I'm really, really pleased with that. I think the whole of Carlisle was behind us to win today, not just the fans, the players, the fans, the board, the media and everybody connected with the club. We just felt like we had an extra player out there and we needed him at times in the second-half. A big pat on the back to everybody connected with this football club that we have got a result today.

" Probably just about deserved our lead at half-time, in the first-half we probably shaded it. I said at half-time that it was a typical League One game where things weren't happening either way. We had to dig deep and battle away for everything we got. It wasn't pretty, it was uncomplicated, it was old-fashioned stuff at times. I want to be better than that, I want to play better than that and I want us to win better than that but ultimately sometimes you don't really bother about how you have played, the result is the be-all and end-all in this game. It's a results business and we got that in the end.

" Give me anything you want, if they are upset that they have been beaten then they are entitled to be. I'm just pleased that, I think with the week we've had, the players deserve a bit of good fortune. To be honest they didn't really have that many clear-cut opportunities on goal. As much as they were passing, we dropped off a bit too deep and we didn't get in their faces in the second-half at times but they didn't really, apart from the one right at the end I think, get a clear sight on the goal.

" I've just sat them down and said that we want to play better, we want to win games more comfortably than that, I don't want too many more of them. I couldn't sing my praises high enough of my players and my staff though who have worked fantastically well together this week. Everybody that we had connected with the club on a playing note was in that dressing room after the game and everyone has played their part, as have the fans out here. I'm absolutely delighted for that.

" It isn't difficult for me to have an opinion, I thought that theirs was a penalty. I thought that there was a chance that the referee was going to give a penalty because if he goes down like that, the way he is running, then I am thinking penalty. I'm thinking that the good Lord up there is thinking of me. He (referee Nigel Miller) has decided that possibly their lad made too much of it and that is the reason the referee didn't give it. First thoughts were that he had given a penalty and I don't mind saying that because it wasn't one was it, he hasn't got it and we've won 1-0 so I can say what I want.

" It's been brilliant, I'm going to enjoy this moment, my Mum and Dad are there, my family are there in the boardroom so I'm going to go and see them and give big hugs all round because it has been a big week for me. "
