Greg Abbott
United assistant manager Greg Abbott spoke to BBC Radio Cumbria on Friday evening as he gave his thoughts on the tough match coming up at Millwall tomorrow afternoon, Abbott talking about what the Blues need to do between now and the end of the season in order to clinch a play-off place :

" We've given ourselves a chance, the way the season has gone we've got enough points now to be on the heels of the leaders. I think a good run in now until the end of the season would see us possibly get one of those play-off spots. I think all the other teams above us are all dropping points and taking points off each other so I think it's still in our hands if we put a decent run together ourselves. We could sneak into one of those play-off positions and that would be fantastic.

" We've said all along that we're not frightened by the league, we've given it a lot of respect but we're not frightened by anything. We've proved that by some of the results and performances against the top teams. I think it's now at the stage where results rather than performances matter massively, we've every confidence that if we perform like we know we can that we can get results more or less anywhere we go. It's not that easy but we do know we are capable of doing it in the right sort of form.

" It's difficult to say why our away form has improved, I wish we'd known otherwise we'd have done it after about five or six games early on in the season so it's a difficult one to answer. I just think belief, we've kept maintaining belief, we've kept maintaining that the players are capable of getting results away from home and they are capable of beating and competing with everybody. We've worked very, very hard to get the results away, there have been some dogged and grinding performances but it's all about getting that result now. I think the effort and the determination of the players to keep going at it has finally won us a few games away.

" It (Millwall) is a ferocious place to go, right from the years I played down there and before me, you don't get anything in that part of London unless you go ready to roll your sleeves up, have a scarp and have a battle. That's what's we've said to the players, that's been the message from last week, now once they cross the white line you hope that they stand and go toe-to-toe with Millwall. Match them in every department physically and mentally, and then hopefully their ability will come through after that, but if you don't match Millwall and don't appreciate that you're going to be up for a massive fight then you get nothing from there. That's the message going into tomorrow. "

" I was unfortunate enough to win three times there and I think the team bus got bricked twice afterwards. I think sometimes you thought that if you scraped away with a draw then it would keep everybody happy. It's been a decent ground for me to be honest, we've won a few times there, but I had one 3-0 mauling when I was playing for Bradford and it hurt down there and everybody is having a go at you. We sneaked a couple of wins though and it keeps the crowd quiet but then they get volatile towards the end of the game, so you just want to get in get your points and get out as quick as you can.

" All the injured players are coming along, some quicker than others although obviously we've got a couple of long-term ones. We've got a couple of niggly problems for tomorrow but they will all be assessed and we'll see how they all are tomorrow, and the manager will name the team from that. It's one thing that you just have to work with, every other club will have them at this stage of the season, we can't use too many excuses, we've just got to get on with it and play with the hand we are dealt with.

" We don't want to give anything away, we'd never do that, as soon as we know something concrete then I know that you will be the first to find out. Up until then you are giving away a little bit to the opposition and obviously within the camp we don't want to name teams and players who are in or out. Obviously other players have got to come in and do jobs and you guard yourself against players feeling a little bit let down or too high up within the squad itself.

" We're always looking for three points but I think it is one of the games where, ultimately if it turns out it is a draw then you'd probably actually take that and you'd go to other places looking to win games. We've got to be realistic in the quest and I think tomorrow that if we don't get three points then we must make sure that we don't get beat so that we don't lose too much ground. Then we need to pick up wins at home, definitely at home, and then pick up another couple of wins away - something like that. Your run is five wins at home and three or four on the road. "
