Southend goalscorer Dougie Freedman spoke to BBC Radio Essex after his side's 2-1 defeat at Carlisle today, Freedman seemingly pleased with his own debut but disappointed with the result :

" The boys played well, I think that we deserved to get something out of the game, unfortunately we never. I thought that it was a good performance, I am pretty sure that they will be there or thereabouts at the top of the league now. So I am pretty sure that they will be there or thereabouts so to come here and give them a good run for their money shows that we are not far off it.

" I have seen our previous matches and the performance was a little bit better but the result was the same. I think that if we can just turn that around a little bit and maybe get these performances into a few results. At least taking points from games would help the confidence then from there on the ball gets rolling.

" So what we can take from today is that we did come up here and we showed that we have got the potential to win games but it is about time we hung in on there. How we keep on going is for 90 minutes, the game doesn't last for 60 minutes, so we have got to keep on going. I have been in football for a long time, it will change, it will turn.

" Anybody here seeing that performance, we played well, we were in the lead for a long time. At half-time we were 1-0 up and their fans were booing. It will change, we have got to just keep on believing in what we are doing and keep on sticking together. When it does change it is a snowball effect, you go on and you start winning games when you maybe shouldn't have.

" It's difficult to be happy about my goal because it is a defeat and the boys are really hurting in the dressing-room. Yes I popped up with a goal but maybe my performance in the second-half, I could maybe have played a little bit better. So I look at both sides of it really and I have got to be a little bit disappointed today. We came here to the top of the league though and we gave them a run for their money, which is encouraging signs. "
