Footymad previewHistory of the Leyton Orient v Carlisle United fixture

Carlisle visit the O's hoping to improve on a poor return over the years. The Cumbrians hoping to pick up on a record which has seen them lose ten and win only three of the 21 games between the two sides at the Matchroom Stadium.

One of the eight draws between the teams came last season in League One at the end of August 2009, Matty Robson scoring for Carlisle in the 42nd minute before Scott McGleish levelled for the home side from the penalty spot three minutes after half-time as only 3,546 fans looked on. McGleish then looked to have earned all three points for the O's when he netted once more in the 85th minute, but he didn't bargain on Blues skipper Paul Thirlwell grabbing a stoppage time equaliser to make the final scoreline 2-2.

That draw last season in League One means the Cumbrians made it six consecutive trips to the Matchroom Stadium without defeat, after in the 2008-09 campaign the teams ground out a 0-0 draw in front of 3,803 spectators, that despite Carlisle having Scott Dobie sent off in the closing stages after he tussled with Orient's Brian Saah.

In the 2007-08 so near yet so far season perhaps United's best away performance of the season was a 3-0 victory at Leyton Orient. The goals, as 6,134 fans looked on, coming from Danny Graham, and then a couple of unlikely sources in David Raven and Grant Smith.

Apart from that excellent victory in that season, Carlisle's meagre two other wins at Orient have both been by 1-0 scorelines. The first victory coming in the 1973-74 season in the old Division Two with a goal in the opening 45 minutes from Dennis Martin as 7,645 spectators looked on. The Blues eventually pipping Orient to promotion to the top tier of English football by just one point come the end of the campaign.

The second win happened 25 years later in the 1999-2000 season when Matthew Pitts secured all three points with the only goal of the game in the 83rd minute in front of 3,871 fans, in another campiagn of that era which saw the Cumbrians escape relegation by the skin of their teeth.

The biggest victory for the O's on home soil against the Blues came in the 1987-88 season when they defeated Carlisle 4-1 in the old Fourth Division. United's only goal that day, at what was then Brisbane Road, was scored by Bobby Hutchinson in front of 2,861 fans in a terrible campaign that only saw the Cumbrians saved from relegation to the GM Vauxhall Conference by the financial demise of Newport County.

Recent respective form guides

Leyton Orient have performed averagely at home of late, winning three, drawing one and losing two of their last six matches at Brisbane Road. The O's have scored seven goals in these games, but conceded an alarming eight. The away form of Carlisle is pretty dire though, chalking up just one victory, along with five straight defeats, from their last six matches on the road. While the Cumbrians have netted a healthy nine goals in those games, a massive 17 have hit the back of the wrong net.

Leyton Orient lie just outside the play-off positions, in eighth, in the Npower League One table, picking up 60 points from their 40 games played so far. Carlisle meanwhile see themselves just below half-way in the division, in 14th, showing a record of 52 points from their 40 games contested to date.
