Carlisle United came into being in 1904 following a change of club name from the existing Shaddongate United
|
The club played matches at Milhome Bank and Devonshire Park before settling at Brunton Park in 1909.
Carlisle were elected to Division Three (North) replacing Durham City, in 1928-29.
The clubs most notable achievement was in topping Division One for a brief period during their one and only season in the top flight 1974-75.
Their most famous match came at the end of the 1998-99 season against Plymouth Argyle when it took a goal, by on-loan goalkeeper Jimmy Glass in the fourth minute of injury time to save Carlisle from relegation to the football Conference. |
