Carlisle United 1904
Article by Footymad Tuesday, 6th November 2001
Carlisle United came into being in 1904 following a change of club name from the existing Shaddongate United

The club played matches at Milhome Bank and Devonshire Park before settling at Brunton Park in 1909.

Carlisle were elected to Division Three (North) replacing Durham City, in 1928-29.

The clubs most notable achievement was in topping Division One for a brief period during their one and only season in the top flight 1974-75.

Their most famous match came at the end of the 1998-99 season against Plymouth Argyle when it took a goal, by on-loan goalkeeper Jimmy Glass in the fourth minute of injury time to save Carlisle from relegation to the football Conference.
